The video of the woman revealing the cost of living in London received more than 20,000 likes. Many online users were stunned by the average cost of basics in London.

In a TikTok video, @tshidee_viks shared that she works as a lawyer in London. The South African opened up about how the cost of living in London humbled her. When the lawyer first moved, she severely underestimated the rent prices in London. Her one-bedroom apartment cost her R56 250.30, and she admitted that the exorbitant monthly rental was shocking at first. She also paid in rands and realised that she should have gotten a place further from work. She added that the costs feel better now that she gets paid in pounds. The professional said groceries are not bad. Another big cost has become her everyday coffee, which she now considers a luxury, along with fast food from McDonald's.

"Two of my besties live there and have gone out of their way to get me jobs etc, and I just can’t understand the cost of living. Also, they can’t get a live-in nanny and crèche is R38k+ makes no sense, but I admire their courage!"

mashudunonkwelo commented:

"I live in London too. If you want to live within walking distance of work then of course the rent will be VERY high. London has one of the world’s best public transport systems - no need to live close to work at all. 🤣 Also, if you think in “Rands”, everything is expensive all over the world outside of Africa. Even Sydney and Hong Kong are more expensive than London."

"Piece of advice: You will never live in peace abroad if you are going to convert every single amount that you spend to Rands. Remember, you are not getting paid in rands😉❤️. Start living the Pounds life 💕"
