Pensioner Plug With Cheapest Meat Stores For Elderly on SASSA Grant

With SASSA payment dates approaching, grant recipients looking to stretch their money further now have a clearer picture of where to find the best chicken deals across South Africa.
A comparison of prices at four major national retailers and several regional stores reveals that Makro currently edges out the competition on frozen chicken. The retailer's Econo brand IQF chicken portions cost R198.95 for a 5kg bag, which works out to R39.80 per kilogram. A 16-piece fresh chicken braai pack is also available at R60 per kilogram, and two 5kg packs of New Era frozen IQF chicken thighs are selling for R460.
National retailer prices compared
Shoprite and Pick n Pay are close runners-up. Shoprite is running a promotion on Farmer's Choice IQF chicken portions at R199.99 for 5kg across major metros, though shoppers will need to swipe their Xtra Savings card to access the deal. In Cape Town and Durban, the County Fair and Grain Field brands are available at the same price. Pick n Pay's No Name frozen chicken braaipack comes in at R199.95 for 5kg nationwide, with fresh chicken ranging between R59.99 and R65.99 per kilogram.

Checkers is the priciest of the four for frozen options. A 5kg bag of Goldi mixed IQF portions costs R254.99, which is R50.99 per kilogram, and is available in Gauteng branches. Fresh chicken braai packs are R69.99 per kilogram in most regions, dropping slightly to R64.99 in the Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal.
Makro sells Econo IQF chicken portions in a 5kg pack for R198.95. Pick n Pay’s No Name frozen chicken portions cost R199.95 for 5kg, while Shoprite’s Farmer’s Choice IQF chicken portions are priced at R199.99 for 5kg. Checkers sells Goldi IQF chicken portions for R254.99 per 5kg.

Regional stores offer even lower prices
For those willing to shop outside the major chains, regional stores offer some of the lowest prices available.
Econofoods, which has branches in Somerset West, Durbanville and Johannesburg's Cresta Shopping Centre, currently stocks Grainfield IQF chicken for R189.95 per 5kg bag (R37.99 per kg) and Rainbow chicken for R194.95 (R38.99 per kg). Both are available online and in selected stores.
In Pretoria, Uitkyk Vleismark sells a 5kg bag of IQF chicken portions for R229.95, which is R45.99 per kilogram. Shoppers in Durban can head to Dawood Megastore for a 10-pack of fresh whole chicken at R39.99 per kilogram.
For the cheapest price per kilogram, Econofoods in Johannesburg and Cape Town offers chicken at R37.99 per kg. Dawood Megastore in Durban follows at R39.99 per kg, while Uitkyk Vleismark in Pretoria has the highest of the three prices at R45.99 per kg.
