A New Zealand rugby fan has left South Africans talking after sharing a video online questioning why the country has not hosted a Rugby World Cup since 1995.
Raeburn Shield posted the clip on Facebook, saying he had just returned from South Africa and could not wrap his head around the 30-year gap.
“How bad is it that this country hasn’t hosted another Rugby World Cup since 1995? Like, I’ve just been there. They freaking mad for it. And they’re great hosts, and it’s really fun,” he said in the video.
He went on to map out the upcoming Rugby World Cup schedule, noting that Australia is next in line, followed by the United States, before calling on South Africa to get the nod after that.

“It has to be South Africa after that, doesn’t it? I mean, I’d go.”
South Africa’s 1995 Rugby World Cup legacy
The last time South Africa hosted the tournament, it became one of the most celebrated moments in the country’s history. The Springboks won the 1995 Rugby World Cup on home soil at Ellis Park in Johannesburg, defeating New Zealand 15-12 in the final.
The image of President Nelson Mandela presenting the Webb Ellis Cup to captain Francois Pienaar, both wearing the number six jersey, became a global symbol of unity in the young democracy. Three decades later, South Africans are still waiting for another chance to relive that magic on home turf.

“World rugby is the reason.”
@GlyndaKellyMostert wrote:
“Good question. I think the powers that be just do not like our winning spirit.”
@VukaniKunene added:
“South Africa should host WWE, F1 and Rugby World Cup.”
@LukhanyoGqili commented:
“We’d win it on home soil. At this rate.”
@JoshBeckett noted:
“Did you see how empty those URC vs AB games were? That is what the games that do not involve SA will be like.”
@SisonkeNondoda simply said:
“We thought the world was watching.”
