“A Pet Indeed”: Golden Retriever Welcomes Intruder With a Toy During San Diego Home Break-In

Nash, a Golden Retriever in San Diego, California, became an unlikely internet sensation on 18 September 2026 after home security footage showed his baffling response to a break-in at his family's home.
His owners, Dante Rowley and Stephanie Calderon, were at the airport preparing to board a flight when their Ring doorbell camera sent an alert to their phones. Someone had climbed over the fence outside their home, used a ladder to reach a second-storey window, and let themselves inside.
Nash was home alone.
What the footage showed
Rather than raising the alarm, Nash watched the stranger settle in. The intruder removed his shoes and shirt, helped himself to some yogurt from the kitchen, and eventually lay down to rest. Nash's response to all of this was to fetch one of his toys and bring it over as a welcome gift.

Rowley and Calderon, still at the airport, called the police immediately. Using the plane's Wi-Fi, they shared access to their Ring cameras so that officers could monitor the situation in real time. Police arrived within roughly five minutes and deployed a drone through an open upstairs window to sweep the house before entering. When officers finally came through the door, Nash greeted them the same way he had greeted the intruder, with a toy in his mouth.

The apparent intruder attempted to escape through a bathroom window but was met by officers waiting outside. Nash was safe and was brought back indoors once the ordeal was over.
