Love, marriage and religion
In an exclusive discussion with Briefly News, Deacon Ditsego Morupe, a respected figure within the Methodist Church, addressed the recent captivating video from a Cape Town church.
We asked if it was normal or common for churches to facilitate or arrange the pairing of partners for marriage. He responded:
"From the perspective of the Methodist Church, and indeed many mainstream Christian denominations, publicly pairing or arranging marriage in this manner is not a normal or common practice. Our understanding of marriage emphasises a personal covenant between two individuals, freely chosen, prayerfully discerned, and guided by God's will rather than a public selection process.

The team asked if it was appropriate for a church to directly involve itself in matching or selecting a partner for its member. The deacon shared:
"While the church plays an important role in supporting relationships and family life, directly matching or selecting partners for members in a public display, as suggested by the article, raises concerns. Marriage is a personal and sacred decision. The church's role is to offer guidance, counselling, and a supportive community, allowing individuals to make their own choices, not to orchestrate unions in a public forum."
When asked how he views the balance between embracing cultural traditions like the Xhosa manhood passage mentioned, and maintaining Christian church practices concerning marriage. Deacon Ditsego said:
"Integrating cultural traditions can enrich our faith, provided they align with and do not contradict biblical teachings. The Xhosa manhood passage is a cultural rite, and respecting heritage is important. When such traditions, however, intersect with a sacred Christian institution like marriage within a church service, the focus must remain on the spiritual integrity and voluntary nature of the union, ensuring it truly honours God."
