Joy Petersen is 18 years old, based in Cape Town, and already running her own luxury furniture business. A video shared from her showroom on 1 September 2026 introduced her to the world, and the internet has not stopped talking about her since.

In the clip, Joy stands inside a beautifully fitted space filled with designer sofas, modern artwork and a marble coffee table. She explains that everything viewers can see is the result of her own work and reinvested earnings. Rather than pocketing early profits, she put the money straight back into building out her showroom.

Luxury looks without the luxury price tag

Joy's pitch is straightforward: real premium furniture at a price most people can actually afford. She points to one of her signature sofas as an example, describing it as nearly identical in quality and materials to pieces sold by top Italian luxury brands. Where those brands charge around $70,000 (around R1,165,853.50), hers sells for roughly $8,000 (around R133,240.40). The sofa is built primarily from real marble and features built-in lighting, designed to be as comfortable as it is striking.

Making furniture of this calibre in South Africa is no small feat. Premium pieces require high-grade materials, skilled artisan craftsmanship, and meticulous attention to detail, from hand-assembled joints and solid timber frames to top-tier upholstery and precision finishing.

Joy sells under the handle @only.furniture.joy and says she shares all her work there. Her account, which now sits at 51.7K followers, grew by 42,000 in a single month with zero paid promotion. She credits the growth simply to people loving what she was creating.
