KWAZULU-NATAL - What's in a name? Well, when it comes to the uMkhonto weSizwe Party, quite a lot it seems.

The party, led by Jacob Zuma, is looking to strengthen its revolutionary structure by asking members to refer to each other by a new term. According to an official memo, party members will now have to refer to each other as "Comrades", effectively immediately.

Why is the party changing the term?

In a notice dated 7 August 2025, MK Party National Organiser Joe Ndhlela announced that, effective immediately, all members should no longer refer to each other as commanders, but rather comrades.

“This shift reflects our shared revolutionary spirit and equality as cadres. All levels of the party must implement this without delay,” he said.

That’s not the only change happening, though. The title Provincial Convenor has been changed to Provincial Chairperson, while the Provincial Coordinator will now be known as the Provincial Secretary.

“These updates are vital for our movement’s strength and growth. All structures must act quickly. Ensure every member knows and follows these directives,” Ndhlela added.
