GAUTENG - A woman lost her life on Thursday morning after a large rock was thrown from a bridge onto a busy Gauteng freeway, striking her vehicle and triggering a fatal crash.

The incident took place on the R24 freeway near Bedfordview at approximately 7.38am.

Rock thrown from bridge crushes car

The rock was hurled from the Concord Road Bridge and came down on the eastbound carriageway, just short of the Gillooly's Interchange. It tore through the woman's windscreen, inflicting severe head injuries. She lost control of her vehicle and collided with the road barriers before being certified dead at the scene.

Crime journalist Yusuf Abramjee reported the tragedy on his X account, drawing public attention to what residents and road users have long described as a dangerous pattern of bridge rock attacks across Gauteng.

Inquest opened at Bedfordview police station

Ekurhuleni metro police confirmed that an inquest docket has been opened at Bedfordview police station. Investigators are now calling on anyone who witnessed the incident, or who may have information that could assist the case, to come forward.

Soweto man killed in rock throwing incident

In similar news, a motorist was killed on the N12 in Soweto after his car was hit with rocks over the weekend. Gauteng traffic police warned motorists to keep an eye out and be vigilant, especially at night. South Africans are terrified, calling for police to do something about the rock-throwing. the incident happened on the N12 between Eldorado Park and Slovo Park. The car's owner was driving a Mini Cooper when rocks were thrown onto the road from a bridge in that area.

Student survives rock thrown in car

Briefly News also reported that a 21-year-old student from Stellenbosch endured a brutal attack while driving to the infamous n2 airport "Hell Run" in Cape Town. While driving to pick up her friend at the Cape Town International Airport on Saturday, 22 July, a rock was hurled through Lucilla Vlok's windscreen and smashed her in the face. With blood pouring from her face, Lucilla made a mad dash to the airport where she could find refuge.
