In a leadership update, the Comrades Marathon Association has welcomed a new Race Director following the mysterious disappearance of Moira Harding during the last event in June 2025.

The last event went viral after Harding went missing just hours after finishing the iconic ultramarathon in Durban.

The incident drew national attention across South Africa, sparking widespread concern, but relief followed when she was found near the National Sea Rescue Institute base in Durban, several kilometres from the marathon’s finish line.

The search for Harding lasted over 12 hours, and she received treatment in the ICU before recovering fully after a few weeks.

Comrades Marathon names new Race Director

Comrades Marathon released an official statement on their X account to confirm the appointment of Sue Forge as the new Race Director for their upcoming event next year.

The organisation is making a strategic restructuring after June's unfortunate incident, as they want to continue being a leading race event on the global stage.

"The Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) is pleased to announce the appointment of Sue Forge as the new Race Director, a role created as part of the Association’s strategic restructuring to ensure the Comrades Marathon continues to be a leading event on the world stage," the organisation stated.
"The CMA Board resolved to separate the roles of General Manager and Race Director, recognising the growth and increasing complexity of the world’s oldest and largest ultramarathon.
"This strategic shift will enable a greater focus on innovation, safety, and the runner experience as the Comrades Marathon continues to attract local and global participation, ranking among the most watched and celebrated sporting events in South Africa."

CMA Chairperson Mqondisi Ngcobo looks forward to welcoming Forge and is optimistic about working with her.

“As we approach our centenary, appointing a dedicated Race Director ensures that Comrades remains at the forefront of global ultramarathons.
"Sue brings unparalleled expertise, a proven track record in major sporting events, and a passion for the running community that will help us deliver unforgettable experiences for runners and spectators alike."

Briefly News also reported that a Mzansi footballer collapsed and died after a league game at the Verulam Recreational Grounds on Todd Street in KwaZulu-Natal.

Witnesses said the player appeared fit and in good shape during the game, leaving teammates surprised when he later complained of breathing difficulties.
