Tristan Perez Murder Case Postponed Again Over Unpaid Legal Fees

  • Murder-accused former club cricketer Tristan Perez appeared in the Wynberg Regional Court this week, where his case was postponed again
  • The postponement was granted to allow Perez a final opportunity to settle outstanding fees owed to his lawyer
  • Elana Brooke's family spokesperson welcomed the court's firm warning that no further delays on this basis would be allowed

The murder case against former club cricketer Tristan Perez has been postponed once more, this time to 17 November, after the Wynberg Regional Court granted him additional time to clear outstanding legal fees owed to his attorney.

Perez is accused of killing his girlfriend, Elana Brooke, 46, following what investigators reportedly suspected was a heated argument. At the time of his arrest in March, police obtained permission to search his phone and discovered a recording of an escalating altercation, which led to suspicions about the circumstances of Brooke's death.

This latest adjournment follows a previous delay caused by a documentation issue involving the defence, which pushed the matter to 15 October. At Perez's appearance this week, the court extended his bail but made clear that no further postponements would be entertained on the grounds of unpaid legal fees.

David, Brooke's ex-husband and family spokesperson, acknowledged the frustration caused by the repeated delays while expressing relief at the court's firmer approach.

"The continued delays are obviously frustrating but we welcome the court's firm stance and remain focused on seeing this matter progress and getting justice for Elana," he said.

Cricketer's Club Membership Ended Before Arrest

Before the charges emerged, Perez was a prominent figure in Cape Town's club cricket scene. According to the Club Cricket website, he had scored a record-breaking 237 runs off 113 balls for Claremont Cricket Club's second XI shortly before his arrest.

However, Claremont Cricket Club had already moved to sever ties with him in mid-February, citing "disciplinary matters arising from conduct deemed to be inconsistent with the ethos, values and spirit of the club." The termination of his membership preceded his arrest in March.
