The Bundesliga has returned to SABC Sport for the 2026/27 season, giving South African fans another free-to-air option for following German top-flight football.
The new campaign started on Friday, 28 August 2026, with Bayern München facing VfB Stuttgart in the opening match. SABC Sport will broadcast selected fixtures throughout the season on its television channel and SABC Plus.
Viewers will also have access to match build-up, analysis and additional digital content as the campaign progresses.
Nearly 10 million fans in South Africa
The Bundesliga’s return comes as its audience in South Africa continues to grow. Peer Naubert, Chief Commercial Officer of Bundesliga Media, said the league’s local fan base had more than doubled during the past seven years.

“Over the past seven years, our fan base in South Africa has more than doubled to nearly 10 million,” Naubert said.
He said the partnership with SABC would help the Bundesliga combine its reach with “local storytelling, content and fan experiences.”

SABC Sport welcomes Bundesliga season
Keletso Totlhanyo, head of sport at SABC Sport, said the broadcaster was pleased to continue the partnership.
“We are excited to bring another Bundesliga season to South African football fans,” Totlhanyo said.
Totlhanyo said SABC Sport wanted to make major sporting events accessible to as many South Africans as possible.
The Bundesliga’s return adds another major international football competition to the broadcaster’s sporting line-up.
South African youngster attracts attention from Bayern Munich
Briefly News also reported that 17-year-old Emile Witbooi had attracted interest from several clubs including Bayern Munich amid speculation about his future.
Cape Town City chairman John Comitis confirmed that German giants Bayern Munich invited the teenager to visit. The invitation is now under consideration as Witbooi continues to attract attention after his performances in the Motsepe Foundation Championship.
The youngster has also previously been on trial at Chelsea and visited Sporting Lisbon, highlighting the growing international interest in his development.
