Eben Etzebeth has opened up on the Springboks’ ageing squad ahead of their final All Blacks Test, with the veteran lock offering an insight into how South Africa’s senior players are approaching the challenge.

Etzebeth, who turns 35 next month, is one of 14 players over 30 in the matchday squad selected by Rassie Erasmus for Saturday’s clash in Baltimore. RugbyPass reported that the lock believes the experience within the group remains valuable.

The 145-cap Springbok explained that the older players are not simply relying on their experience.

I know we’re getting a bit older, but personally it feels like we’re working a lot harder than when we were younger. I think I speak on behalf of all the older guys who have been here for a while,” Etzebeth said.

He added that the senior players understand the responsibility that comes with continuing to represent South Africa.

“We understand how fortunate we are to still be here, and I think that’s why we’re still performing at such a high level and competing with the best in the world.”

Rassie keeps faith with experience

Erasmus has backed that experience by making only two changes to his starting XV for the fourth Test. South Africa lead the series 2-1 after successive victories in Cape Town and Soweto.

Etzebeth also pointed to previous Springbok comebacks after setbacks, including the 2021 British & Irish Lions series and the 2019 and 2023 World Cups.

That history could matter again as the Boks attempt to close out the series.
