André Marinus de Ruyter is a South African businessman who previously worked at Sasol and Nampak. He was the CEO of Eskom, South Africa’s state-owned electricity company, from December 2019 to February 2023.
Early Life and Education
André de Ruyter was born on 20 March 1968 in Pretoria, South Africa.
He holds a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Pretoria, a Bachelor of Civil Law certificate and Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of South Africa, and a Masters of Business Administration from the Nyenrode Business University.
André de Ruyter is married and has three children.
Career
De Ruyter has more than 30 years of experience in the petrochemical industry.
He served as General Manager of Sasol Ltd, Senior Executive at Sasol Ltd, CEO Designate and Executive Director of Nampak Ltd.
In December 2019, he was appointed CEO of Eskom.
During his tenure at Eskom, he targeted coal theft syndicates and oversaw a shift towards renewable power. However, during his tenure, South Africa suffered the worst electricity blackouts in history.
In May 2023, he published a book titled Truth to Power, which detailed his three years at Eskom and the level of pillaging, looting and political interference that contributed to the energy provider’s downfall.
