Podcast host and academic Sizwe Mpofu-Walsh has poked holes into Patriotic Alliance deputy president Kenny Kunene’s explanation of why he was found at the house of an alleged criminal mastermind during a police raid.

Kunene dominated headlines after he was found at the home of Katiso Molefe, a businessman recently arrested for the assassination of DJ Sumbody. Sizwe Mpofu-Walsh didn’t buy the Patriotic Alliance politician's explanation that he was transporting a journalist to Molefe’s house for an exclusive interview.

He questioned why the journalist needed to be transported by Kunene instead of using an Uber or any other e-hailing service. Mpofu-Welsh took a cheeky jab at Kunene, stating that being Johannesburg MMC of Transport doesn’t mean he should be the one driving people around the city. He also highlighted why it’s wrong for a politician like Kunene to own a media house.

“I mean, is Uber not available? Why did he have to drive the journalists to this person’s house? I mean, as my producer said, I know he’s the MMC of transport, but it doesn’t mean you have to literally, physically transport people to where they need to court.
"Secondly, it would be a huge conflict of interest to be a sitting politician on the one hand and trying to facilitate an interview for a media publication on the other, because the media’s role is to keep politicians accountable. You can’t have politicians who are also media owners. Double-dealing at the same time, trying to send their journalists for interviews while they are the people who should be interviewed at the same time. So that also doesn’t make sense,” Sizwe Mpofu-Walsh said.

Mpofu-Walsh revealed Kunene’s media house was deregistered by the CIPC in early 2025. Sizwe Mpofu-Walsh asked why Kunene was ferrying a journalist to a murder suspect’s home in its name. Mpofu-Walsh said:

“We’ve researched whether Africa News Global is even still registered, and judging by CIPC records, it seems to have been deregistered in February 2025. I mean that needs to be clarified in future interviews. Is it actually a registered entity? In which case, if it’s not registered, then why was he ferrying these journalists to the house of this alleged criminal mastermind for a deregistered media entity?”
