Award-winning musician King Monada has once again found himself on the losing side after a promoter took him to court for failing to pitch up for a booked event. The Limpopo-born musician’s pockets are tens of thousands lighter after a court ordered him to refund a promoter after he failed to pitch up for a show.

King Monada has been ordered to cough up R49,000 for his lack of professionalism. After reaching an out-of-court settlement with one promoter in 2024, King Monada was taken to court by another for failing to perform at a booked event.

Limpopo-based promoter Impresario Eric Thoka sued King Monada for failing to perform at a festival they booked him for on New Year's Day in 2023. The Nkowankowa Magistrate’s Court ruled in the promoter’s favour and ordered King Monada to pay R49,000 plus legal fees for failing to perform at the event almost two years ago.

Eric Thoka confirmed the ruling in an interview with Sunday World. He said the judgment was delivered on 25 July 2025. Thoka said he expected the Skabhora Moreki hitmaker to launch an appeal because of his arrogance. He told the publication that Monada failed to attend court proceedings and instructed his lawyer by phone.

The promoter celebrated the win and vowed never to work with King Monada again.

“It’s a pity it had to go this far, but this was never personal. It was about principle; we needed to recover our money after he humiliated us by not showing up. I’ll never book him again,” he said.

The promoter said King Monada left him with no option but to approach the courts after he failed to refund the money he was paid. Eric Thoka said he paid King Monada in advance, printed posters and sold tickets on the promise that the musician would perform at the event, only for him to fail to show up because he was performing in Pretoria.

He alleged that King Monada complained that the R49,000 the promoter paid wasn’t enough for him to be a headline act and that he would repay the full amount. After being fed up with King Monada’s unfulfilled promises, the promoter decided to seek legal recourse.
