Former Backstage producer Mfundi Vundla opens up about his near-death experiences and overcoming the trauma of almost losing his life in the hospital.

Vundla recently trended on social media when he broke his silence regarding the fired 16 Generations actors back in 2014.

Former Generations actors Zikhona Sodlaka and Zolisa Xaluva also responded to Vundla's interview about their dismissals.

The legendary TV mogul shared in an interview with Daily Sun on Tuesday, 31 March 2026, that he came close to death three times.

Vundla, who was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer in 2022, says he had an infection that nearly ended his life.

"I remember three distinct times when I got really, really close. It's a horrible thing when you are fighting death. I ended up getting clots in my lungs called embolisms," says the TV legend.

The Generations: The Legacy creator also reveals that he ended up in the ICU, fighting for his life, and pleaded with the nurses to save his life.

The SABC previously shared on its X account that Vundla received a Royalty Soapie Trailblazer Award for his contribution to the SA TV industry.
