Mzansi Magic has put an end to speculation about the future of The Bala Family, confirming the beloved reality show will not be coming back for a third season.

The programme follows the lives of brothers Zwai, Loyiso and Phelo Bala, their sister Pinky, their mother Vuyiswa and extended family members as they navigate relationships, music careers and everyday life together. Since its debut in 2023, the show has consistently trended on social media, building a loyal following of fans invested in the family's journey.

Mzansi Magic shares why The Bala Family is cancelled

Speaking to TshisaLIVE, Mbali Ntuli, head of unscripted content: middle and mass SA, acknowledged the family's contribution to the channel while pointing to the broadcaster's evolving programming priorities as the reason behind the decision. Ntuli did not address audience figures when asked.

"We're grateful to the Bala family for sharing their lives and stories with our viewers over two seasons of The Bala Family. A number of factors are considered as part of any commissioning decision, as we continually review our slate and programming strategy. Mzansi Magic remains focused on bringing audiences compelling and authentic local stories," Ntuli said.

Zwai Bala addresses the fans

Before Mzansi Magic issued its statement, Zwai Bala had already taken to social media last Tuesday to address fans directly on behalf of the family. In a candid message, he disclosed that the family had been working behind the scenes for close to two years, hoping to bring the show back, but that the final call was never theirs to make.

The family's full statement, shared on Instagram, also touched on how deeply personal the experience of filming had been, describing the show as far more than an entertainment exercise.
