How Zuzu proved you can eat healthy on a budget

Initially sceptical about the low price tag, Zuzu admitted that she expected the produce to be of poor quality. However, she was pleasantly surprised to find everything fresh, proving that affordability doesn’t have to mean compromising on quality.

Xolo Mtshali, a health and fitness content creator, spoke to Briefly News about how South Africans can eat healthily on a budget, especially when money is tight. Xolo stressed the importance of planning and smart shopping:

“Plan your meals in advance to avoid buying unnecessary items and reduce food waste. Make a strict shopping list and stick to it.”

She also advised buying staples like rice, maize meal, beans, and canned goods in bulk, checking flyers or apps such as Shoprite Xtra Savings and Checkers Sixty60 for specials, and comparing prices between different stores.

“Limiting processed foods and snacks is key, whole foods tend to be cheaper and healthier. Focusing on staple foods like maize meal, lentils, beans, and seasonal vegetables can provide nutritious meals. However, a diverse and fully balanced diet may be difficult to maintain every week with rising prices, so it’s more sustainable short-term with some compromises.”

Xolo offered practical strategies:

“Track your spending to identify where you can cut back. Cook more at home instead of eating out, which adds up fast. Consider joining stokvels or community buying groups to purchase groceries in bulk for better savings. Also, shop around payday, when retailers often have specials. If possible, grow your own vegetables or herbs, even on a small scale. And don’t be afraid to buy generic or no-name brands, which often have the same quality for less.”

Brandfit told Briefly News that the secret lies in using everyday, affordable ingredients and planning ahead.

“This topic is incredibly relevant, especially now when so many South Africans are trying to stay healthy without spending a lot of money. “When it comes to affordable foods, I always encourage people to stick to nutritious, simple ingredients, things we already know and use. You don’t need fancy products or ‘Woolworths food’ to eat clean. Staples like oats, brown maize meal, brown rice, lentils, and eggs are incredibly cost-effective and still give your body the fuel it needs.”

He also highlighted the value of canned fish, frozen veggies, and seasonal produce, saying they offer real nutritional benefits at a fraction of the price.

“A lot of people think eating healthy is expensive, and to be fair, it can be if you don’t have the right plan. But with good preparation, clean eating becomes manageable. Planning your meals, cooking in bulk, and sticking to whole foods can save time and money."

Brandfit also suggested buying from local markets and street vendors, where fresh produce is often cheaper. For those new to fitness, he recommended starting with small changes.

“Drink more water, cut down on sugary drinks, and prepare meals at home. Don’t aim for perfection, focus on consistency and building healthy habits. I run three-week wellness challenges for beginners, especially those on tight budgets. We use bodyweight workouts and easy meal ideas with everyday foods. The goal is to show people that fitness and health don’t have to be expensive.”
