Health first, hustle later

The Briefly News team spoke with Lusanda Tyawana, a seasoned stylist, about the viral video of an American stylist working from a hospital bed.

We asked her what her first thought was when she saw the video. She responded:

"I was shocked and amused, but not surprised. It's a sad reality for many self-employed people. On one hand, I understood the pressure to make money, but on the other, my first thought was always that health must come first. You can not be a great stylist if you are not well, and no amount of money is worth risking your well-being."

We asked if the extra money offered by the client justifies him taking the job. The stylist shared:

"I understand the struggle of being self-employed. When you don't work, you don't earn, and every cent matters because the monthly bills won't understand that you were sick. But for me, no amount of money can justify compromising your health, especially if you're in the hospital. I'm sure if he were very sick, though, he wouldn't have taken the job. Maybe he was just waiting to be released.

When asked what her message is to other self-employed individuals in any field who might feel the pressure to work even when they are not well. Lusanda said:

"My message is simple: prioritise your health. Your job is important, but your well-being is even more so. You cannot be good at what you do if you are not well. Set boundaries, communicate with your clients, and remember that you are your own boss. You have the power to say no."

The clip gained massive attention, with many social media users finding the situation highly amusing. Many joked that he was getting a much-needed workout while getting paid for his work. Several users said they did not blame him for honouring the request, saying that being self-employed can be a tough struggle where every cent matters.

Others, however, were angered by the client's request and said he should block her after finishing the wig. They argued she lacked respect for his health and well-being and that a proper client would allow him to rest and recover.
