Mzansi has once again proven the power of unity after South Africans rallied behind a matric learner in need. The young student’s story, which surfaced online, highlighted struggles with limited resources while preparing for final exams.
According to the Good Things guy Arthur Mathebula, a 19-year-old student in Grade 12 at Hoërskool Pretoria-Wes, started a BackaBuddy campaign to collect money for his matric dance. His request was straightforward, which was R2,500 to pay for his flight, clothing, and some necessities. A night he didn't want to miss, one that would only come around once.

"This year holds a significant milestone for me—my Matric Dance, which is similar to prom and a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for every learner. However, the cost involved is more than I can afford, and I don’t want to miss out on this chance to celebrate with my classmates. With your support, I hope to cover the expenses for my outfit, ticket, and other event-related costs. This dance represents much more than just a celebration; it’s a moment I will treasure for the rest of my life," he told the publication mentioned above.
Then an extraordinary event occurred. The South African community rallied and completely overtook his aim in under eleven hours. What began with nothing now has more than R11,000 in it, enough to ensure that Arthur has a buffer for what comes ahead, in addition to enjoying his matric dance.
When Paballo Maseko discovered Arthur's BackaBuddy link and saw that it had not yet received a single donation, Paballo decided to reshare it on her social media account.
She wrote:
"I came across a young boy's Backabuddy link for his matric dance. Can we assist him in reaching his intended audience?"
The internet reacted. Everyone who saw her post was motivated. Donations ranged from R10 and R50 to more substantial sums like R300, R500, and even R1,000. No matter how tiny or large, each contribution built up to something truly remarkable.
Along with their gifts, South Africans left encouraging notes, transforming Arthur's effort into a thread of goodwill. Now, the young man can attend his matric ball, and the donations have increased to R13,088.
