A street quiz video posted on Instagram on 25 August 2026 left South Africans both baffled and amused after a woman claiming Cape Town roots failed to answer a question most South Africans would consider basic.
Content creator typical.movie shared a clip from the United Kingdom in which a woman revealed her father is from Cape Town and her mother is from Zimbabwe. When asked to name the country in the world that has three capitals, she drew a blank and even dismissed South Africa as the answer.
For many watching, that was the most jaw-dropping part.
South Africa’s three capitals explained
South Africa is one of only a few countries in the world with three official capital cities, each serving a distinct branch of government. Pretoria functions as the executive capital, home to the Union Buildings and the seat of the presidency. Cape Town serves as the legislative capital, where Parliament sits, and laws are debated and passed. Bloemfontein holds the role of judicial capital, housing the Supreme Court of Appeal.

The three-capital system dates back to the post-Anglo-Boer War era and was designed as a political compromise between the former Boer republics and British colonies when the Union of South Africa was formed in 1910.
