A 23-year-old barista from KwaZulu-Natal is heading to London after claiming one of South Africa's most coveted coffee titles. Musawenkosi Blessing Mosikili was crowned Starbucks South Africa's 2026 National Barista Champion, earning his place on the global stage.
Mosikili works at the Starbucks Hillcrest store, where regulars have become such loyal fans that some have started bringing their families in to meet him. He claimed the national title at the final held at the Starbucks Reserve in Melrose Arch, Johannesburg, beating out competitors from across the country.
His journey into coffee was not handed to him. "I had to wake up and do something with my life; that's when I presented myself to Starbucks Gateway, which is where the journey started," Mosikili shared.
From Gateway to global stage
This September, Mosikili will travel to London to compete at the Starbucks EMEA Barista Championship, held at the Starbucks EMEA Support Centre in Chiswick from 16 to 18 September. For him, the competition carries a meaning beyond the trophy.

"As an African, I strongly believe that no one will tell an African story better than an African child," he said.
He has spoken openly about the heart of what he does, saying the championship is less about winning and more about the connections made across the counter, one cup at a time.
