PRETORIA - President Cyril Ramaphosa addressed the masses at the Union Buildings to launch the Gauteng Heritage Carnival Parade after two years of lockdown due to COVID-19.
Ramaphosa said in his speech on 24 September that Heritage Day is about nation-building and for South Africans to show unity in their diversity.
SABC News reported that the president at the parade asked South Africans to remain patient amid the extended implementation of loadshedding. Ramaphosa said that solutions are being looked at to solve the energy crisis.
“Now we’re going through the throes of an energy crisis, in the recent two weeks we’ve been seeing rising loadshedding completely disrupting our lives, our economy, and causing havoc from a social point of view, health point of view. Even as we face these challenges, as South Africans, as we have done in the past, we have persevered, and I ask once again, let us persevere, the challenge is being addressed.”
South Africans on social media had this to say about the president's speech:
@BathuMangoni asked:
"Where is the land? Our heritage is our land! #LandRestoration"
@Segolooo stated:
"You have not addressed loadshedding, which is killing the little left of SA. You never show up when it matters. There is nothing to talk about this heritage. You cannot display the principles of Ubuntu."
@RealDonDada89 said:
"I thought this guy was reported missing. You are still wanted to account for super loadshedding."
@JUDGEJUSTIN777 wrote:
"Even loadshedding on Heritage Day? You guys in the ANC really screwed up our beloved country. You told the nation to have a hot meal with their families on heritage day. Cruel and heartless remark sir, when millions of citizens don't have anything to eat."
@PersonInZA tweeted:
"Because electricity isn’t a problem for the cadres who have generators provided by us. More important to be doing the song and dance routine."
@HulkmanZA added:
"Sorry, Cyril. Rolling blackouts makes this a day of regret and disappointment, not celebration."
@Mokgoth49601582 posted:
"You must try to address such events at night, I want to see something."
