GAUTENG - Floyd Shivambu is no longer a member of the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party.
During a media briefing on 8 August 2025, National Chairperson Nkosinathi Nhleko confirmed that the former Secretary-General’s membership was terminated with the party. Shivambu was removed from the post on 19 June 2025 following an uproar over his visit to Pastor Shepherd Bushiri, but maintained at the time that he would never resign as a member of the party.

Why was Shivambu’s membership terminated?
During the address, Nhleko stated that the leadership of the MK Party noted several statements and utterances by the former Secretary General, whom he didn’t mention by name.

Shivambu has been critical of the party of late, despite stating that he would never resign and even beginning a process to establish whether the country needs another political party.
“The leadership of the MK Party had considered these utterances and actions, and arrived at a conclusion that the former Secretary General had not only publicly defined themselves outside the ranks and ideological line of the MK Party, but also seriously violated the trust placed in them as a member of the party,” Nhleko noted.
He added that a decision was taken to then terminate the membership of the “former Secretary General.” A formal letter of expulsion was sent to Shivambu on 15 July 2025.

Shivambu isn’t the only MK Party departure
Shivambu’s departure was announced on the same day that former MK Party Deputy Secretary General, Nombuso Mkhize, also left the party.
Mkhize, who was Shivambu's deputy, is joining him at his Mayibuye Consultation Process. Shivambu announced on X that Mkhize had been hired as the organisation’s Head of Presidency.
Spokesperson for the Mayibuye Consultation Process, Sydney Baloyi, said Mkhize’s appointment was a testament to the importance of Mayibuye’s mission.
“She has huge credentials as an organiser, an administrator and is somebody who can give much-needed direction and support to the many volunteers we have already signed up for the next chapter of the Mayibuye evolution,” Baloyi said.
