King Misuzulu Faces Backlash Over R10 Monthly Contribution Idea for Zulu Citizens

Two of King Misuzulu kaZwelithini’s personal advisors have proposed that each Zulu person contribute R10 every month to help fund the affairs of the Zulu nation. They argue this would reduce reliance on the government, which already provides almost R86.1 million annually.

Zulus to contribute to king

The advisors, Professor Jabulani Maphalala and businessman Philani “PG” Mavundla, said the contribution would ensure that the Zulu nation could independently manage its affairs. This comes after the king announced that from September, the annual reed dance will take place at the newly restored Mashobeni palace, located on the border of Nongoma and Uphongolo.

The Mashobeni palace was once the home of Queen Nandi, mother of King Shaka. The decision means the annual ceremony will no longer be hosted at the historic eNyokeni palace, which has been the venue since its revival in the 1970s.

Political parties express concern

Political parties, including the DA, have warned that the move could leave the nearly complete R300-million eNyokeni precinct as another unfinished project. Concerns have also been raised that the cash-strapped provincial government may need to spend more to accommodate the sudden change. In defence, Maphalala and Mavundla called such worries “not only far-fetched but utterly ridiculous.”

They criticised repeated claims that there is “no money” whenever the king makes a decision, despite the taxes already paid by Zulu people. In a joint statement, Maphalala and Mavundla said they fully support the king’s decision and warned that no one should challenge his authority, describing him as “the voice that tells no lies.”

“The Zulu people continue to pay taxes in this country, and we have never been asked to cease doing so.

“The question must be asked: what has been done with our contributions? If it is true that there are insufficient funds to support what the Zulu nation rightfully deserves, we propose a solution," they said.

Misuzulu calls off wedding

In another report, Briefly News stated that the Zulu Monarch King Misuzulu kaZwelethini called off his marriage to his fiance Nomzamo Myeni.

Misuzulu and Myeni were supposed to get married on 24 January 2025, but one of his wives reportedly filed a court order to prevent it from happening
