SAWS Warns of Extreme Weather for the Upcoming Weekend in KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng, Free State

JOHANNESBURG — South Africans must expect a rough weekend in the heavens as the South African Weather Service (SAWS) warned of severe rainfall from 14 to 16 November 2025.

According to the South African Weather Service Facebook page, the central and eastern parts of the country will experience a severe weather event, which could result in heavy rains with a risk of flooding, a sharp drop in temperatures, large amounts of small hail, severe thunderstorms, and excessive lightning.

Weather forecast for weekend

While much of the country will experience rainfall on 15 November 2025, provinces like the North West, Mpumalanga, KwaZulu-Natal, and the Eastern Cape will experience an 80% chance of widespread rainfall, which could cause flooding in high-risk areas. It will be cool in these regions. Parts of the Eastern Cape, Northern Cape, the North West, and Free State will experience a 60% chance of rainfall with a sharp drop in temperatures.

Conditions on the following day, 16 November, will continue as the heavy rainfall moves in a northern direction away from the central parts of the country. Much of Limpopo will experience an 80% chance of rainfall with cold temperatures, while Musina and the surrounding parts will experience a 60% chance of downpours, with temperatures remaining warm.

The temperature will be cold in much of KwaZulu-Natal and cool in parts of the province, as well as the North West, where an 80% chance of rainfall is expected. Gauteng, Mpumalanga, and parts of the Free State will be cold, with excessive rainfall, thunderstorms, and hail.

SAWS issued a Yellow Level 2 warning for Gauteng, Mpumalanga, and KwaZulu-Natal for 6 October 2025. The parts of the country that were affected experienced thunderstorms, damaging winds, and heavy rainfall.

SAWS also issued a Yellow Level 4 warning for severe thunderstorms that affected Mpumalanga, Limpopo, and KwaZulu-Natal on 27 October 2025. The provinces experienced heavy rainfall and thunderstorms.

Cape Town floods displace thousands
