Western Cape Community Outrage After Grade 1 Learner Allegedly Raped at School

School under fire over rape allegations

According to the mother of the seven-year-old learner, the child was reportedly attacked in the school's toilets. eNCA reported that the provincial education department said it learnt about the incident on Thursday, 13 November, and is offering counselling to the girl and her family.

It is alleged that a fellow learner followed the grade one learner to the toilets and assaulted her. Angry residents gathered at the school on Friday, 14 November 2025, to demand answers. The residents are calling for access to school CCTV footage and want the school leaders to answer.

Community leader Noluvuyo Mpongwana told SABC News that the community wants clarity on the child’s situation. She explained that the child’s mother, who lives in Khayelitsha, came to the area on Thursday, 13 November, after which the child was taken to the hospital and then to the police station, where a case was opened.

What did SAPS say?

The South African Police Service in the Western Cape confirmed to Briefly News that a case of rape was reported to the Atlantis SAPS for investigation on Thursday, 13 November 2025.

SAPS spokesperson Captain F.C. Van Wyk said that, according to reports on Friday, 7 November 2025, a 7-year-old victim was allegedly raped at a school in Atlantis.

"This case was transferred to Milnerton FCS for further investigation, and investigations continue," Van Wyk said.

Briefly News contacted the Western Cape Education Department for comment and is waiting for a response.

Other sexual abuse incidents in SA

The South African Police Service (SAPS) arrested a man in Giyani, Limpopo, on 19 May 2025 for allegedly raping a woman after luring her with the false promise of love and employment. According to the South African Police Service, the suspect lured the victim to Pretoria after pretending to be a man called Jeff Rals. When the victim realised that he did not look like his profile picture, he lied and said he was Jeff Rals' brother, who sent him to fetch her.

No arrests were made after a three-year-old child was raped, allegedly by a scholar transport driver in Botlokwa, Limpopo. According to SABC News, the driver allegedly transported her to the Creche when the incident happened. The toddler started complaining to her grandmother that she was in pain. The grandmother rushed her to the hospital, where she was examined. The doctors confirmed that she had been raped.

South Africans were shaken after two children aged 11 and 13 were arrested for allegedly raping a grade five learner in the North West. The incident happened at the Mmatsheko Primary School. Other learners from the school witnessed alleged sexual activity between the two boys and the grade 5 learner. They then reported the incident to the school-based support team. The school reached out to the social worker, parents, and guardians.

Alleged Soweto rapist arrested

In a related article, Briefly News reported that an alleged serial rapist was arrested in September 2025 at his home in Diepkloof. This was after he was connected to over 230 rape cases.

The man's reign of terror began in 2008 when he targeted victims between the ages of 15 and 55 in Gauteng and the North West. He is facing 35 counts of rape, 22 charges of robbery, and other charges.
