SARS Hits Morgan Maumela's Mother With R39.9m Tax Assessment Over Alleged Fraud

SOUTH AFRICA — The South African Revenue Service (SARS) has taken action against Mboneni Benedicta Maumela, the mother of Morgan Maumela, issuing her with assessments totalling R39.9 million in unpaid taxes, penalties and interest for the period spanning 2017 to 2023.

According to TimesLive, SARS informed Mboneni that it had found prima facie evidence of fraud. She has since mounted a legal challenge to contest the assessments. SARS declined to comment on the matter, citing confidentiality provisions under the Tax Administration Act, which prevent the authority from confirming or denying the existence of any investigation or engagement with a specific taxpayer.

Maumela family's property portfolio under scrutiny

Mboneni served as a senior official in the Limpopo Department of Health before retiring in 2020. Prior to the SARS action, reporting had already placed her at the centre of scrutiny over her finances, with records showing she had spent approximately R30 million on two luxury apartments in Sea Point, Cape Town. The family's combined property portfolio is estimated to be worth in the region of R300 million or more.

Tembisa hospital looting probe tightens

The pressure on Mboneni Maumela arrives as investigators continue to build cases connected to the Tembisa Hospital looting scandal. The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) has identified three coordinated syndicates it holds responsible for siphoning more than R2 billion that was allocated for public healthcare. The Maumela syndicate is specifically accused of looting more than R816.5 million from the hospital.

In a significant blow to the family last month, the Johannesburg High Court ordered the forfeiture of assets valued at R326 million linked to the Maumela syndicate, following an application by the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).

Ramaphosa denies relationship with Hangwani Maumela

Briefly News also reported that President Cyril Ramaphosa defended himself on 14 October 2025 in Parliament, Western Cape, against allegations that he had a relationship with corruption-accused businessman Hangwani Maumela. Ramaphosa appeared before the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) sitting and discussed his relationship with Hangwani Maumela, the businessman who is under the microscope for allegedly looting the Tembisa Hospital.He said that 47 years ago, he married Maumela's father's sister, who is his aunt. The couple divorced four years later.
