With just over a month to go before AFCON kicks off in Morocco in January 2026, national team coach Hugo Broos recently announced his team for the warm-up clash.

Khumalo’s comments come as Brandon Petersen, who has been in outstanding form for Chiefs, continues to impress. Petersen has recorded seven clean sheets in the Betway Premiership and currently leads the league in that department, strengthening his case for national selection.

Khumalo names Chiefs star who deserves call-up

Speaking to Andile Ncube on Metro FM on Tuesday, Khumalo expressed his belief that Brandon Petersen should have been included in the Bafana Bafana squad. He argued that national team selections should be based on club performances, pointing out that Petersen had kept seven consecutive clean sheets before conceding his first goal in a recent match against Orbit College in the Nedbank Cup.

According to Khumalo, Petersen was even close to breaking Itumeleng Khune’s record for most consecutive clean sheets, making his omission difficult to justify.

Khumalo also mentioned players such as Tshegofatso Mabasa and Bradley Grobler, who have scored crucial goals for their clubs but were also left out of the squad. He concluded that only the coach can properly explain these decisions.

"Doctor, just leave our players alone, don't try to force things here. We still happy with our players not being selected."

Jeph Desoul shared:

"Kaizer Chiefs players are not playing to impress Bafana Bafana but the Kaizer Chiefs brand, the sooner the better, Motaung rejects the players for national duty."

Tshepo Gadlela Masilo added:

"What's the point, cos he won't play, we still got Sipho Chaine on the bench."
