Bafana Bafana are currently ranked the tenth-best team in Africa and were one of the best sides during the AFCON qualifiers and the World Cup qualifiers, despite having been docked three points.

This year's AFCON is scheduled to take place in North Africa, with Morocco hosting 23 other nations for a month.

A sports journalist has shared his opinion on South Africa being one of the favourite teams to win the competition.

Top teams that can stop Bafana at AFCON

Sports journalist Moses Mbogo, while speaking with Briefly News, named some of the teams that could hinder Bafana Bafana from winning the AFCON after naming them as one of the top contenders.

"South Africa are part of my favourite teams to win AFCON, but their chances also depend on the performance of Nigeria, Senegal, Morocco, Egypt, and Algeria," he said.
"Those five teams have a huge reputation in the competition and could end Bafana Bafana's dream of winning the competition in December.
"The defending champions, Ivory Coast, are also one of the top contenders to win the title, but they are not as strong contenders in this edition compared to the others."

Mbogo also explained why Hugo Broos' experience of previously winning the competition would be important for Bafana Bafana.

"Broos, being a one-time winner of the competition with Cameroon, will help Bafana Bafana in terms of having an experienced coach in the ranks," he added.

"South Africa has been giving other teams in Africa a run for their money since the Belgian tactician arrived, and I expect them to do the same in Morocco."

South Africa defeated top sides like Morocco and the Democratic Republic of Congo in the last edition, and are looking forward to a better result compared to last year's in Rabat.

This year's AFCON competition is scheduled to start on December 21, 2025, with the host, Morocco, facing Comoros in the opening game. The final will take place on January 18, 2026.
