From being a refugee to playing for the Springboks

Vincent Tshituka arrived in South Africa as a child refugee in 2002, after his family fled politically motivated violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Despite never attending a rugby-playing school, he discovered the sport while studying at the University of Johannesburg.

Take a look at the beautiful pictures below:

In July 2025, he made his long-awaited Springbok debut, in a Test match against Italy at Loftus Versfeld Stadium, shortly after finalising his South African citizenship. Reflecting on the milestone, Tshituka said he felt privileged to wear the green and gold, acknowledging the challenges of his past.

“I did not go to a rugby-playing school, which was a disadvantage. But at university, I made up for lost time. The more difficult your background, the more you appreciate the opportunities life presents. That day was extraordinarily special for me and my family,” he told reporters.
