On September 13, 1950, he was born in Chicago, Illinois, US, and grew up in West Bloomfield Township and then moved to Birmingham, Michigan. He went to Brother Rice High School, a suburban Roman-Catholic all-boys school in Bloomfield Hills, in 1977. Chris Hansen height is 1.88m.
He then got into Michigan State University where he graduated with a bachelor's degree in telecommunications in 1981. While on campus, he was lucky enough to work with the school's radio station as a news reporter, which helped him in his career.
