Actress Jada Pinkett Smith has disclosed that she and Will Smith were separated for six years before the 2022 Oscars incident, where Smith slapped Chris Rock.

In an interview with People magazine, Pinkett revealed that they have been living completely separate lives since 2016. In the interview promoting her upcoming memoir, Worthy, she said.

“We’re still figuring it out. We’ve been doing some really heavy-duty work together. We just got a deep love for each other, and we are going to figure out what that looks like for us."

Are Jada Pinkett and Will Smith working on divorce?

When the host, Hoda Kotb, pointed out that this separation isn't a divorce on paper, Jada affirmed, saying, "Right."

She also said that while she has considered a legal divorce, she hasn’t been able to bring herself to it.

"I made a promise that there will never be a reason for us to get a divorce. I haven't been able to break that promise," the 52-year-old said.

Jada also opened up about the factors contributing to the fracture in their relationship.

"I think we were both kind of just still stuck in our fantasy of what we thought the other person should be," she revealed.
