Fellow elders on the podium rushed over to save him, but Wainaina was pronounced dead shortly after.
The 67-year-old man's family published an obituary on Google confirming the tragic incident, with initial reports indicating that he suffered a heart attack.
"With deep sorrow and humble acceptance of God's will, we, the family announce the passing of Rtd Elder Eng. Kenneth Kungu Wainaina on 19th May 2024," read part of the obituary.
What were Kungu Wainaina's last words?
During the viral address, Wainaina reminded the congregation of the church's history and vision.
"We came to this place in the year 2005 on June 19. We are only one month less than 19 years," he said.
Given his demeanour, it was impossible to tell from the beginning of the clip that he was in his twilight moments.
However, a woman was heard screaming in the congregation a few seconds before he collapsed.
Among the last words Wainaina muttered before collapsing words were:
"God our light, our hope, and our strength."
