Man Displays His Payslip with R320 Net Salary for June After Deductions
- A man, Peter Salasya, took home a paltry R338 out of his hefty R171,6k pay for the month of June
- The Salasya, who works as a lawmaker in Kenya, exhibited his payslip while suggesting in jest he is struggling financially
- According to Salasya, due to how pathetic their payslips looked, his colleagues in the National Assembly voted for the Finance Bill 2024, hoping for handouts from the government
MP Peter Salasya suggests he struggles financially despite his hefty monthly pay.
The ever-jolly Mumias East legislator shared a payslip detailing his salary for June.
Amount Salasya took home as June salary
He earned a gross pay of R171,6k, but an avalanche of deductions left him with a paltry net pay of R338.
His individual income tax of R51,5k and mortgage of R77,5 took up a large chunk of the deductions.
Others were channelled to loans, such as the parliamentarians Sacco and the Kenya Young Parliamentarians Association (KYPA).
The MP appeared to suggest that such salaries could be what pushed his colleagues in the National Assembly to vote for the condemned Finance Bill 2024 with the supposed hope or promise of handouts from the government to bolster their pay.
"Here is my salary. This is what made the Kenya Kwanza MPs vote yes for the Finance Bill 2024. Some of us decided to persevere with the little pay. If my payslip looks like this, what of that of the police officers, teachers and doctors?" he posed.

Disapproval of increased salaries
This came as a host of lawmakers disapproved of the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) 's move to increase the salaries of state officers, including MPs, senators, governors, Cabinet Secretaries, and Principal Secretaries.
For instance, in its gazette notice, the SRC said that Moses Wetang'ula, the speaker of the National Assembly, and Amason Kingi, the speaker of the Senate, would receive a gross salary of R169k this month, up from R155k
Man's R8k deductions leave him with less than R500 of his salary
In other stories, Briefly News reported that a South African man on TikTok shared his payslip showing his salary deductions. The viral post showed he was left with only R464 after deductions worth R8 978.
The video sparked debate online, with some questioning the high deductions and others offering financial advice.
