A captivating video of Kolmanskuppe, a ghost town in Namibia, fascinated social media users with its raw beauty and rich history.
The intriguing clip, shared on Facebook by Steven Ndukwu, garnered many views, likes and comments from viewers who loved the deserted town.
The video starts with Steven Ndukwu driving deep into the Namibian desert, where he discovers a town that looks as though it has been deserted for decades. He refers to it as a 'ghost town' that has been swallowed by the desert. He explains that in the 19th century, this very place was considered the richest town in the world, thanks to the abundance of diamonds discovered there. Back then, the town was booming, its wealth fueled by natural resources that transformed it into one of Africa's wealthiest settlements.
The desert swallows a diamond dream
The man shares how German miners, in their pursuit of fortune, built a slice of Europe in this Namibian outpost, complete with mansions, schools, a casino, and even a hospital. As the time wore on, however, and the diamond reserves decreased, people began to leave. The explorer notes that the town of Kolmanskuppe in the 19th century and in 1956 was left at the mercy of the desert. Steven also showcases a house that reportedly belonged to the richest man in the area during its peak. He estimates the current value at a staggering 15 million dollars if it were to sell today.
