The story was shared in a video posted by TikTok user @masego_mellow, who detailed her experience employing a domestic helper. She explained that she found the helper through an agency about two months ago, and they clicked from the moment they met.
They hit it off immediately, and despite being warned by others to check her belongings before leaving the house, she chose to trust her completely. It was her first time employing a domestic worker, and she made sure she was paid well. The couple even topped up her pay during emergencies and helped her pay the R1,500 agency placement fee.
The discovery that changed everything
At first, there were no issues. But one day, her partner realised money left in the house had gone missing. When she asked the helper about it, the answer was no, and she decided not to press further. Then, another incident, missing food, stirred further doubt.

The helper, originally from Lesotho, later asked for time off to fix her work permit. While she was away, the employer checked her room but left one locked area unopened. Soon after, she learned that the helper had complained about her to the agency. The agency told her to leave, but during packing, the amount of belongings raised an alarm. A closer look revealed the reason her trust had finally been broken.
Mzansi reacted to the video with shock, with many viewers expressing disbelief at the events described. The comments section quickly filled with stories from others who had experienced similar situations with domestic helpers. Some shared cautionary advice, while others expressed sympathy, saying it’s hard to know who to trust in such personal working relationships.

Mamawabo commented:
“I am so traumatised by some of these aunties. I now do all my own cleaning and laundry, even though I work Monday to Friday and really need to rest on weekends. My house is huge and I truly need a helper, but I’m scared after hearing stories like this.”

“Referrals are always better. These fake placement agencies will be the death of us. I once fetched a helper from Mamelodi, and it was the biggest mistake of my life. Wa bona, I’m a Mosotho myself, but I will never work with one again. Ke sharp.”
Phyllisnkosi said:
“My helper once left in the middle of the night, taking my son’s brand-new watch and my clothes. When we woke up, she was gone without telling anyone. After that, I promised myself I would never hire a Basotho helper again.”
