A heartwarming video capturing a spontaneous isiXhosa language lesson on a safari became a hit, showcasing a beautiful and supportive relationship between a mother-in-law and her daughter-in-law.
The clip, shared on TikTok by @kylie_dunywa, delighted many viewers and sparked a lively debate about more animal names in the native language.
The video features the English-speaking makoti (daughter-in-law) standing next to her mother-in-law, who is holding her grandchild. The duo is outside, at a game reserve, ready to practice the new vocabulary. The makoti initiates the Xhosa lesson, asking the mother-in-law to name the animals they encounter while on the game drive. The mother does not hesitate to explain, naming the animals in isiXhosa.
Mother-in-law teaches makoti Xhosa animal names
The lesson starts smoothly with “indlovu” (elephant) and “ingwena” (crocodile). The humour follows when the mother-in-law tries to recall the name for rhinoceros, hesitantly offering “imvubu yamanzi,” which translates to "hippopotamus of the water", sparking laughter between both women. She then continues with “indlulamthi” (giraffe) and offers a fun explanation about how the name was derived.

The makoti, TikTok user @kylie_dunywa, eagerly repeats each word after the mom. The lesson concludes with “ingonyama” (lion). In a final moment of shared humour, the mother-in-law explains that the zebra does not have an isiXhosa name, causing both women to laugh again.
