Brian Elliot, a celebrated South African swimmer and veteran coach, died on Thursday, 17 September 2026. He was 79 years old.
Born on 23 May 1947, Elliot built a distinguished career in competitive swimming, representing South Africa internationally and setting multiple national records during his athletic years.
It has been a dark week in the world of sports and for South Africa at large after the tragic death of a Kempton Park runner Elizabeth Moselakgomo and former SABC Sports presenter Owen Ndlovu was found dead on Wednesday.
Elliot's legacy in South African swimming
After retiring from competition, Elliot channelled his expertise into coaching, spending years developing talent through the Aquabear Swim Club. His influence extended across generations of athletes who passed through his programme.
Swimming was a strong family tradition. His father, Peter Elliot, was a professional swim coach who ran the Barracuda Swim Club in Port Elizabeth, giving Brian a foundation in the sport from an early age.

Beyond the pool, those who knew him remembered Elliot for his sharp sense of humour, quick wit, and deep commitment to his family.
He is survived by his wife, one son, two daughters, two daughters-in-law, five grandchildren, one great-grandchild, two brothers, and one sister.
Memorial service details
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, 19 September 2026, at 12:00 at the Brian Elliot Hall at Brylin School, Fairview, Port Elizabeth, with parking available on Eucalyptus Street.
Attendees have been invited to wear blue and yellow, the colours of his swim club, as a tribute to his life in the sport. The service will also be broadcast live on YouTube for those unable to attend in person.
