The State alleged that Perez attempted to stage the scene as a suicide, and investigators told the court that a voice recording recovered from his cellphone appeared to capture an argument and sounds consistent with a physical altercation.

The Wynberg Magistrates' Court granted Perez bail of R5,000 on 9 April 2026, finding that the State had not demonstrated he was a flight risk or a danger to society. The case was later transferred to the Regional Court and has been postponed on several occasions, most recently due to a documentation issue. His next scheduled court appearance is 15 October 2026.

Women For Change has publicly called on both Blue Bells and the Western Province Cricket Association to reconsider allowing Perez to participate in competitive cricket while the murder charge remains unresolved.

The organisation has argued that sporting bodies should have safeguarding frameworks in place for individuals facing serious allegations linked to gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF), and called for clear policies covering players charged with offences such as murder, rape, or domestic violence.

The organisation also pointed to South Africa's formal classification of GBVF as a national disaster, which the National Disaster Management Centre declared on 21 November 2025 under the Disaster Management Act.
