South African actress Tebogo Thobejane has shared some personal details about her relationship with her ex-boyfriend, Vusimuzi ‘Cat’ Matlala, who is in court after being arrested for allegedly ordering a hit on her.
The revelation comes a few days after Thobejane lamented how blogs and social media users were spreading false information about her.

Speaking to the Sunday Times, Tebogo Thobejane discussed meeting Vusimuzi ‘Cat’ Matlala and shared details of their relationship.

The actress, who starred as Belinda in the now-discontinued SABC2 soapie Muvhango, revealed that she met Vusimuzi ‘Cat’ Matlala in 2020 at a private event in Sandton.
She said Matlala asked his friend to call her over so that they could have a conversation. Tebogo said the version of Matlala she met at the private event was the man of her dreams.
“He asked his friend to call me over so we could talk. He was charming, generous, attentive, the version of a man many women are taught to trust,” Thobejane told the Sunday Times.
She said they quickly became a couple and would have some quality time at his house. At the time, Tebogo said she did not suspect that Vusimuzi Matlala was an alleged member of the Big Five Cartel.
“He didn’t come across as a villain. Cat and I always hung around his house,” Thobejane added.

Tebogo Thobejane declined to discuss whether her ex-boyfriend moved among senior government officials or confided details about his activities, legal or otherwise, stating that the matter is still subjudice.
“Some information I can’t just talk about as the matter is still in court. What hurts most is that I loved someone who later became the reason I feared for my life,” she said.
Their relationship only lasted 13 months, and they broke up sometime in 2021. About two years after their breakup, on 23 October 2023, Tebogo Thobejane survived a shooting that left her friend in a wheelchair.
When asked whether the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry had called her to testify, Tebogo Thobejane said:
“Why would they call me? They don’t care about me but rather about their friends. I’m on my own, and no one has ever reached out to me.”
She said one of the greatest lessons she learnt from her relationship with Matlala is to trust her intuition.
In a statement shared with Briefly News journalist Jessica Gcaba, Tebogo alleged that Matlala "paid girls to harass me online, and tried to kill me."
Thobejane said she is living in fear and is shaken by the ordeal she faced. She also fears for the people who might get hurst should Matlala walk free.
Clinical psychologist discusses how anger can inspire change
Speaking to Briefly News, clinical psychologist Michele Naude who shared how anger can inspire positive change. She explained that for that to happen, one should avoid speaking from their own experience.
"Anger can be harnessed to galvanise a call to action for necessary change within a community. Instead of using generalised statements, saying “in my personal experience,” and “as I understand it,” to avoid the experience of others who feel differently to feel their experience is wrong," Naude explained.
Tebogo Thobejane reveals dating struggles
Meanwhile, Briefly News reported that Tebogo Thobejane opened up about her romantic life after surviving an alleged assassination attempt ordered by her ex-boyfriend, Vusimuzi 'Cat' Matlala.
In an Instagram Live session recorded and reshared on Sunday, 2 November 2025, Tebogo Thobejane accused men of being cowards. Social media users shared mixed reactions, with some sympathising with her while others accused her of playing the victim.
