Speculation has been rife online after a man, Fidelis Moema, working for an international audit company, KPMG, was arrested.

Why was Fidelis Moema arrested

Citizen.co.za reports that the Hawks charged Fidelis, a bursary specialist at KPMG, for allegedly embezzling over R16 million in bursary funds.

He allegedly diverted the funds to his acquaintances' accounts instead of covering the tuition fees of deserving students.

"Instead of paying university fees on behalf of students, the accused paid the monies into bank accounts of friends and individuals who own businesses.
“The money would then be paid back into his personal bank account. KPMG suffered a loss of R16.5 million due to his fraudulent actions,” said Hawks’ Warrant Officer Thatohatsi Mavimbela.

Social media users have unearthed posts that depict Moema and his partner, Sthe Bhengu, flaunting a seemingly opulent lifestyle, potentially financed by the embezzled funds.

From trips abroad and expensive gifts to indulgent celebrations, the pair lived the high life.

One post dated November 2022 showed the expensive car Fidelis bought his lover as a push gist.

In the photo, Bhengu stood next to a black Range Rover SUV.

The post was captioned:

"My baby put me in a Range as a push gift a while back."

The Range Rover Velar's price starts at R1.5 million and can go up to R2.2 million or more depending on the year of manufacture and mileage, among other factors.

The car has luxury amenities such as a diesel engine, automatic transmission, heated and ventilated seats, retractable door handles and a moon roof. Other posts showed the pair on vacation in various exotic places, including one in Greece.

Moreover, the pair also hired a helicopter to blow out pink smoke during a party to reveal their child's gender.

Nongoma Municipality officials arrested for money laundering and fraud

In other corruption-related matters, Briefly News reported on the story of senior officials of the Nongoma Municipality who were arrested for money laundering, theft and fraud.

The municipality’s manager, supply chain manager, chief financial officer, and one of the officials’ bodyguards were arrested. They appeared in court. Netizens were shocked by the level of corruption in municipalities in the government.
