Labubu, a quirky and beloved character from the popular Ziqi figurine range, has become a cult favourite among toy collectors and pop culture fans worldwide. However, with original figures fetching high prices online, especially for rare or limited editions, many South Africans have been priced out of the trend.

Hong Kong-Dutch designer Kasing Lung produced the collectable designer plush toy monster elves under the Labubu brand, which is only available at Pop Mart, a store in China. Additionally, the series' protagonist is named Labubu.

Woman shares plug for local Labubu dupe

This woman’s discovery of a local dupe has hit all the right notes. The viral post quickly gained traction, with South Africans thrilled to find an affordable alternative to the popular and often pricey designer collectable.

Under her TikTok account @badgal.kiki, she posted a video on 20 July 2025 where she unveiled the Labubu dupe, which was LaBokBok, that is priced at R99 at Checkers. @badgal.kiki showcased the budget-friendly figure she purchased, comparing it to the original in terms of size and style.

Although it isn’t an exact replica, many viewers commented that it captures the same cute and mischievous spirit that made Labubu a global sensation.

With the cost of living continuously rising, many South Africans have turned to dupes and local alternatives for everything from fashion to collectables. This Labubu find proves that you don’t need to spend a fortune to be part of a trend.
