The chap, Sivuyisa, confessed to living a reckless lifestyle before admitting himself into the institution. The Xhosa man was involved in violent activities like housebreaking and consumed drugs.
Other men from around South Africa would check themselves into the rehab and only communicate with their loved ones telephonically. Sivuyisa was the only man in the programme who never got the privilege of talking to his family during his stay.
Man shares brutal life in Cape Town rehab
A South African man from Cape Town, Sivuyisa, recalled his intense experience at Mitchells Plain Hope Again Recovery. Last Friday, he recorded a now-viral video explaining his brutal stay of being punished for seven months.

Sivuyisa shared space with over 20 other criminals who previously lived violent lifestyles. They had a fixed timetable and rules, and if they broke them, they would face immense consequences.
The 20 men would rotate weekly to complete chores like cleaning and cooking. They had three meals a day, with dinner being eaten at 6 pm.
Some of the rules included no stealing, no fighting and no singing of worldly songs as they were kept in a religious institution. The men would attend church daily, and their progress would be assessed closely.
Sivuyisa got into a lot of trouble, from stealing pies because supper was too early to unintentionally singing rap songs. People who disobeyed the rules were given brutal punishment like staring at each other, rewriting Bible verses for a month, and they’d be banned from talking to family.

Sivuyisa recalled seeing a grown man crying during his punishment, and he gave up on the programme. The rehab had an open-door policy that allowed people to leave whenever they felt like it.
Sivuyisa explained that at the institution, one is forced to take a good look at oneself and face all that they have become due to outside influences:
“You’re facing your demons.”
The chap is now a changed man and knows the Bible by heart:
“That place changed me; it gave me enough time to self-introspect. To this day, I remember the scriptures I wrote.”
