Soweto’s vibrant food culture has once again left an international visitor in awe. An American man visiting Zone 9 in Soweto, Johannesburg, recently shared his food journey after trying a variety of local dishes, including liver with pap, oxtail, and heart burger.

Taking to his social media account under the handle @trentonjdavis, the tourist who shared a video on TikTok was seen tucking into a plate of pap served with liver, a traditional staple in many South African homes.

While he admitted that liver was not his favourite, he praised the meal for its authenticity, saying he could understand why it remains a popular choice in local households.

@trentonjdavis later indulged in a heart and oxtail burger, which left him with a completely different reaction, saying:

“This is real good,” he remarked enthusiastically, nodding his head as he savoured the rich, meaty flavours.

The unique combination impressed him, and he described it as a taste he would not easily forget.

Adding to his food adventure, @trentonjdavis also sampled a gatsby, a giant sandwich popular in Cape Town but widely enjoyed across the country. True to its reputation, the oversized meal won his approval.

“I am really digging South African food,” he said, clearly taken by the diversity of flavours.
