"True Servant to So Many": Michaelhouse Mourns Retired Teacher of 30 Years at Elite KZN School

Michaelhouse is mourning the loss of one of its most dedicated educators. Richard McMichael, who spent 30 years at the prestigious KwaZulu-Natal institution, passed away in August 2026. The school posted a tribute on Facebook on 3 August, honouring a man described as "a truly significant Michaelhouse man."

McMichael came to teaching after briefly exploring the commercial world. He started his career at Howick High School, where he met and married his wife Mary, before joining Michaelhouse in 1994. He was brought in to establish Accountancy as a subject at the school and also lectured University of South Africa modules in Accounts, Economics and Commercial Law as part of the Sixth Form programme.

Michaelhouse educator honoured for career

McMichael's contribution stretched well beyond the classroom, according to the school's official tribute by Mike Thompson. On the sports field, he coached cricket and rugby to junior teams and later managed the First XI soccer side. He led chess and an investment club in his early years and guided Michaelhouse's team to second place in the national Business Game finals in 1997.

In 2009, he was appointed Housemaster of East, but a serious illness in early 2010 forced him to step down before he could take up the role. The Michaelhouse community rallied around the McMichael family during that period, helping them move out of the house in a single day while Mary stayed by Richard's side during a tracheotomy. He recovered and, in 2014, was appointed Housemaster of Baines, a post he held for nine years until his retirement at the end of 2024.

"This captures the Richard that I knew, and I am really so sorry to hear of his passing. I was privileged to work with Richard in my years at Michaelhouse and always appreciated his sense of humour, kindness and his gentle manner. My sincere condolences go to Mary McMichael, Nick and Andrea at this very difficult time."

"What a true gentleman and a true servant to so many of us. Rest in peace Sir."

Nick Anderson recalled:

"Back in 2015, I was watching the school musical in the theatre, and Mr McMichael happened to sit next to me. Shortly into the 2nd act, I noticed he had fallen asleep. He awoke to thunderous applause at the conclusion of the musical, and looking quite bewildered, he turned to me and said, 'Fantastic show!' That light memory is just one of many of a wonderful man."
