GAUTENG – Kenny Kunene has been cleared of any wrongdoing by the Patriotic Alliance (PA).

The former Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Transport in the City of Johannesburg (CoJ) resigned from the post and as a CoJ councillor after an investigation was launched into his suspected ties with alleged criminal underworld figure, Katiso “KT” Molefe. He was also suspended by the party.

Investigations were launched after Kunene was found in Molefe’s Sandton home when police arrived to arrest KT. Molefe was arrested in connection with the murder of Oupa Sefoka, who was also known as DJ Sumbody.

The PA Deputy President explained that he was at Molefe’s home to accompany a young journalist from African News Global who wanted to interview KT.

PA clears Kunene of any wrongdoing

On Monday, 22 September 2025, party leader Gayton McKenzie announced that investigations were nearly complete and urged the public to be patient.

Eyewitness News has now reported that investigations are complete, and Kunene has been cleared of any wrongdoing. The investigation found that Kunene was truthful when he said he was accompanying a young journalist to Molefe’s house.

Social media users were not impressed with the outcome of the investigation, questioning how valid it was.

Kunene denies having ties with Vusimuzi Cat Matlala

Briefly News reported that Kunene dismissed allegations that he had any ties with controversial businessman, Vusimuzi Matlala.

The Deputy President of the Patriotic Alliance (PA) also maintained that he wasn't friends with Katiso Molefe.

South Africans weighed in on Kunene's claims on social media, but many didn't believe anything he said.

Kunene's citizen's arrest sparks debate online

Briefly News also reported that Kunene went viral after he made a citizen's arrest, which was captured on camera.

In the viral clip, Kunene and members of his security detail can be seen apprehending a man.

The PA deputy president explained the situation, accusing the man of trying to extort money.
