WESTERN CAPE — A 47-year-old correctional services officer stationed at Goodwood Prison has been arrested after members of the South African Police Service Anti-Gang Unit allegedly uncovered a cache of drugs, cellphones, and other items in his vehicle.
The arrest took place during a targeted roadblock, during which Anti-Gang Unit officers stopped and searched the warden's car. What they found inside raised immediate suspicion.
Drugs and cellphones allegedly found in warden's car
According to police, the search yielded 600 Mandrax tablets, 100 grams of tik (crystal methamphetamine), and 300 grams of dagga. Officers also reportedly recovered 23 cellphones from the vehicle.

In addition to the narcotics and communication devices, condoms and tablets were among the items allegedly found in the car at the time of the roadblock.
Items raise questions about intended destination
The nature and volume of the items discovered have drawn attention to the risk of contraband smuggling into correctional facilities. Mandrax, tik, and dagga are among the most commonly trafficked substances inside South African prisons, while unauthorised cellphones remain a persistent security concern for the Department of Correctional Services.
The combination of drugs, multiple cellphones, and sexual health products found in a prison official's vehicle raises serious questions about the alleged intended use of these items.
The warden has been taken into custody following the discovery. Further details regarding formal charges and court appearances had not been confirmed at the time of publication.
Hawks arrest warden for conspiracy
In similar news, the Hawks arrested a 47-year-old correctional services official for allegedly conspiring to murder senior staff at the Waainek Correctional Centre in the Eastern Cape. Hawks spokesperson Warrant Officer Ndiphiwe Mhlakuvana said the arrest followed an intelligence-driven investigation after classified information was received on Wednesday, 4 February 2026, indicating imminent threats against the facility's senior management. Mhlakuvana said the intelligence identified the Head of Centre and a Unit Manager as the intended targets.
