Sizwe Dhlomo Reacts to ANC’s 2026 Johannesburg Local Government Election Prediction: “It Is Too Low”

Broadcaster Sizwe Dhlomo has sparked a fresh debate online after responding to a new opinion poll showing the ANC's support collapsing in Johannesburg. His verdict was blunt: the figure might even be too generous.

"18 is too low but yes, the ANC will lose," Sizwe wrote on X in response to a News24 report on the poll, posted on Friday, 7 August 2026.

What the Johannesburg poll found

The survey, conducted by The Common Sense/Social Research Foundation (SRF) via telephone in July 2026, covered 500 respondents across Johannesburg and carried a margin of error of 4.4%. It placed the ANC at just 18% support in the city, while the DA came in at 42%. Other parties polled as follows: ActionSA at 10%, MK Party at 13%, the EFF at 8%, and the remaining parties combined at 9%.

The figures point to a dramatically shifted political landscape ahead of the November 2026 local government elections. While the numbers leave open the possibility of the ANC forming a multi-party coalition without the DA, analysts note such an arrangement would likely be unstable. A DA-ActionSA alliance is mathematically viable but widely considered unlikely given the bitter rivalry between the two parties.

Beyond Johannesburg, President Cyril Ramaphosa's national favourability ratings are also reportedly sliding, with many voters blaming the ANC for the illegal immigration crisis and its perceived impact on local employment.

"It's a campaign to make ANC voters lose hope, even the ones that are loyal, to say, 'Why vote when we will lose anyway?' Wafa umbutho KaThambo noMandela sibhekile, noZuma naye waphinde wawubhokoda."
