Career

Tyla began her music career by posting covers and original songs on Instagram, gaining traction on social media platforms like TikTok. Her debut single, "Getting Late" (2019), blended pop with Amapiano, a South African genre. She signed with Epic Records in 2021. Her international breakthrough came with the 2023 single "Water," which went viral and earned her a Grammy Award.

Her self-titled debut album was released in March 2024, followed by a deluxe edition in October 2024. Tyla is known for coining the term "popiano" to describe her fusion of Western pop and R&B with African influences, aiming to create shorter, more accessible versions of typically longer Amapiano songs.

Family

Tyla's birth name is Tyla Laura Seethal. She is one of four children born to Sherwin Seethal (father) and Sharleen Jasmin (mother). Her siblings include Whitney Jasmin, Tyrese Seethal, and Sydney Seethal. She also has a collaborative YouTube channel with her sister Sydney called "Sydney and Tyla."
